The collection is an interesting set of treasures representing the period from 1500 to 1800. The selection on display aims to comprehensively map this period. The collection has significant gaps, but the combination of painting and printmaking provides a richer indication of the context of stylistic development. The exhibits from the beginning of the period under review come from the Central European area and depict the transition from the late Gothic to the Renaissance. From the 16th century onwards, Italian art, particularly with the emergence of Mannerism, dominates the representation of works. The art of the 17th and 18th centuries is most convincingly represented in this exhibition. It reflects many of the social, political, and religious events of Baroque Europe at the time. The exhibition is divided into naturally occurring units of sacred art, mythological themes, landscape painting, and other genres. Within each group, visitors can learn about the approaches of artists working under Italian, Flemish, or Dutch influence.
