Joint exhibition of contemporary Czech and Slovak visual art
The New Zlín Salon is linked to the tradition of the historic Zlín Salons held each year is Zlín between 1936 and 1948. At the time, these were the most important displays of contemporary Czechoslovak (or Czech, between 1939 and 1944) fine art. The Zlín Salons became a model for the connection between the Baťa company and unconventional culture.
A successful renewal of these displays in the form of the New Zlín Salon took place in 1996 under the auspices and direct participation of President Václav Havel. Since 2005, artists from Slovakia have participated in this exhibition as well.
It remains a major goal of the organisers to ensure that the selection of artists is unbiased. In the sixth year of the New Salon there will be a relatively significant change in the composition of the expert jury responsible for nominating artists, although the jury’s selection method will be preserved. This change came about as a result of the organisers’ efforts to ensure that the Salon does not become merely an exhibition of Czech and Slovak art from the last half-century. To the
contrary, the Salon should serve as a representative cross-section of the current artistic scene in both countries. Similarly to the Umělec má cenu [Artist has an award] activity, it is in a certain sense focused mainly on those authors – from those in their thirties up to the oldest generation – whose work is inspirational even for younger artists and theoreticians, and which continues to develop. The exhibition’s ambition is above all to present those artistic expressions that have the potential to participate in the European discourse on art yet also relate to local events. This year’s displays will feature nearly one hundred authors from the Czech Republic and Slovakia working with various media. As part of the exhibition, a tribute will be dedicated in the form of a separate exhibition in the House of Art to two major artists, this time Jiří Valoch (CZ) and Monogramista T.D (SK). In addition to the core premises of the organiser – the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín, the House of Art and the second storey of the Zlín Chateau, a substantial portion of the Salon’s exposition is located in the industrial space of Building 32 on the factory grounds. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue containing,
in addition to texts on contemporary Czech and Slovak art, also biographical information on the exhibiting authors and reproductions of exhibited works.
