The need of a specialized magazine was already intensively perceived in the gallery since 1991. The first three issues of Space (1993-1995) were published monthly (i.e. 12 issues a year) since the publication of the first sample (1992) and they had a newspaper design as they contained eight pages in the A3 dimension. Besides fine arts and architecture the magazine also dealt with other topics since the very beginning of its publication such as monument care, history, selected historical aspects of the present art and culture phenomena including poetry.
Since1996 the magazine was designed as a specialized revue in the A4 dimension having 28 print pages plus an envelope, which made its graphic design change significantly. The continuity with the previous Space magazine newspaper design is kept in the traditional sections. Besides two most important parts dedicated to fine arts and architecture, the section From the Archives (Z archívů) has remained its inherent part. The poetry is focused as well. The orientation on the questions about the monument care and the history of architecture is evident. Moreover, the design and the advertising are emphasized.
After certain economic and publication problems in 1999 and 2001 due to which the magazine was not published regularly, the authors managed to renew the edition at the beginning of 2002 by means of two magazines including three issues that summed up the whole nine-year publication. Moreover, a new graphic design was presented which corresponded more with the editors’ aims. The graphic designer Zdeněk Macháček remained a constant member of the editorial council. His proposal presented a new graphic form of the magazine. The topics of the traditional sections were emphasized by means of graphics, text forms and the dimension changes done on the basis of the editorial board experience. A more legible letter standard and a looser text modification were chosen. The article titles became more dynamic. The magazine’s content remained the same as it proved successful.
The magazine Prostor Zlín starts to be published each trimester since 2003 which starts its ten-year publication anniversary. Since then four issues are released every year in the standard graphic and book form, but becoming larger. Each issue contains about 48 print pages. The modern and contemporary art are still focused. Traditionally, much attention is given to modern architecture and urbanism. The history, especially the one of science and art is still emphasized. Other magazine sections dedicated to poetry, design and applied arts remain unchanged. The articles’ professional level got improved. In addition to the reviews and information, the magazine keeps its high professional level, which means that research-oriented, interesting articles with a valuable content are preferred. These aspects are taken into consideration by the authors in order to address a broad circle of readers. The magazine’s content and its whole orientation started to be considerably influenced by the beginning regular cooperation between the Zlín Gallery with the Slovak professional institutions, artists and architects. At the beginning of the tenth anniversary the résumés start to be published in English, this time based on all published texts and the magazine distribution is provided in the selected places in the Slovak Republic as well.
In 1996 the magazine got the Certificate of a High Quality Graphic Design which it was given by the Czech Information Design Institute.
In 2013 the magazine Space Zlín celebrates its 20th publication anniversary. The Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín is the main publisher. It cooperates with a lot of partners- not only with the professional publicists, artists and architects, but also with enterprises, foundations and important cultural and social institutions.
