The House of Art project is the successor of the New Zlín Salon triennial, which was first held in 1996. Over the course of eight rounds, its concept has undergone various changes, such as the criteria for selecting artists, the changes in the jury, the participation of exhibiting artists from abroad and accompanying events. From the original aim of a representative overview of the contemporary art scene presenting various opinions and generations, the project has evolved towards a more distinct message. In 2020, we used a new name: House of Art. It was not chosen at random, but refers both to the former main exhibition space of the salons in Zlín and to the time when the organizing institution functioned more as an exhibition platform and less as an art museum. What has remained unchanged throughout the triennial’s existence, however, is the desire for a comprehensive periodic presentation of contemporary art by established Czech and (since 2004) Slovak artists. For the sake of completeness, let us mention that the younger artists (up to the age of 30) are featured at the Zlín Youth Salon triennial, which is still organized in its more or less original form (the last one was held in 2021).
This year’s House of Art II deals with the theme “The Life of an Artist”. We have invited about 50 artists who participated in the 2009 Zlín Youth Salon to the main exhibition in Building No. 61, simply called the Zlín Salon. In 2009, most of these artists were under 30 years old, so today they should be at the peak of their artistic career. However, it is also a time in their lives when they no longer qualify for the incentives and support for young emerging artists and, on the other hand, have not yet become classics. It is complemented by the Obsession exhibition in Building No. 14, the seat of the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín, curated by Milan Mikuláštík, which presents a different view of the theme. It focuses on blurring the boundaries between art and life, featuring art production as an everyday practice and a compulsive obsession. In November 2023, the exhibitions will be followed the L. Š. Salon, intended to be a tribute to one of the initiators of the New Zlín Salons, Ludvík Ševeček, as well as a contribution to the issue of artistic generations.
